Ahead of the highly anticipated major movie release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Walker Books has acquired the innovative digital The Bane Chronicles story cycle from Cassandra Clare in which she co-authors with Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson a sequence of ten short stories.

The Bane Chronicles feature Magnus Bane, a flamboyant immortal warlock who appears in The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series which Walker Books has published with great success since 2007. In the forthcoming film, Magnus Bane will be played by Godfrey Gao, a Taiwanese actor enormously popular throughout Asia. Launching this April, one digital story will be published every month (priced £1.99) with the complete collection available as a book during 2014.

Post movie release, Walker Books will extend the publishing programme further with the release of The Shadowhunter's Codex, the essential background handbook to the Shadowhunters' world, by Cassandra Clare and Joshua Lewis in November 2013.

Simon & Schuster has signed books five and six in Cassandra Clare's bestselling YA series, The Mortal Instruments. S&S says there are more than three million copies of the series' three published titles in print. Clare launched The Mortal Instruments in 2007, with City of Bones, about a teenage demon slayer; City of Ashes and City of Glass followed. Book four, City of Fallen Angels, is scheduled for April 2011.

The two new books under contract--City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire--are scheduled, respectively, for May 2012 and September 2013.

Gill Evans, Fiction Publisher and Editorial Director at Walker Books, has acquired City of Fallen Angels, the fourth book in Cassandra Clare's bestselling urban fantasy series, The Mortal Instruments.

The story follows Simon, a character from the first three Mortal Instruments novels, City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass, as he adjusts to life as a vampire. The English language edition of City of Fallen Angels will publish globally in spring 2011.

"Simon has always been one of my favourite characters to write about, and I'm excited to get the chance to tell his story while revisiting some of the other characters that I love from the Mortal Instruments series," said Cassandra Clare.

Evans has also acquired a prequel trilogy to The Mortal Instruments series, The Infernal Devices. The first title, The Infernal Devices: The Clockwork Angel, will publish globally in the English language in September 2010, and will have particular appeal to UK fans, as it will be the first of Clare's books to be set in London.
